This was pretty easy to make - and utilizes the teaching elements of every preschooler's favorite book - The Hungry Caterpillar! I used it with two year olds but it could be used right up to Kindergarten.

This felt activity can be used in many ways but I preferred to use it alongside the story. I would read the book as normal but when the part where the caterpillar eats the fruit I would put the book down and use the felt board. The first time around, we counted the fruit together and I showed the correct number to the children. The next few times I might give each child a number to hold and see if they can give it to me when I am looking for that number. As an open ended activity you can also let children play with the caterpillar and pretend that he is eating the fruit! Felt boards are fun because they are tactile, interactive and kids love the fact that the felt sticks to itself.
