This week's craft was inspired by our visit to see this awe-inspiring show last weekend.
The 2018 - 2019 'Just Kidding' season at Symphony Space has just begun in NYC. We visited the Rainbow Fish 'Glow In The Dark' show last weekend performed by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia and it was even better than we could have imagined. What was really great was the announcement before the show that this was not a 'shush show'. That is, that children were to be allowed to ask questions, to try to tell the story in their own words as the show was performed and to talk about what they saw. I think that many parents worry about taking their kids to see shows and worry about having to keep them well behaved so it's great to see kids' shows taking note of this and understanding that kids make noise when they get excited! The gasps and squeals of delight from the children in the audience every time a new sea creature was revealed on stage and the clear joy that the show instilled in everyone that watched inspired us to try to recreate some of the fun at home. Just Kidding and Symphony Space, Upper West Side, NYC
Just Kidding launched on Saturday October 6th 2018 and will run nearly every Saturday until March 2019. Each week something new and different is on offer, from puppetry to live music performances. We were also at Michael and the Rockness Monsters a couple of weeks ago and they were also fantastic - actually one of the most energetic and engaging performances we have seen this year. They used a variety of instruments and had the whole audience on their feet dancing - adults and kids alike.
Upcoming show schedules for 'Just Kidding' can be found here and listings for the next few weeks are below:
October 27 at 2 pm: National Dance Institute: The Celebration Team: kids dancing for kids in Just Kidding’s annual high-energy show, a joy-filled dance celebration of the cultures, creatures, and cities that thrive at the river’s edge.

Reviews of Just Kidding
Time Out New York Kids calls Just Kidding “the best concert series for kids” with “a jam-packed bill of family programming.” New York Family recommends the “excellent programming for children,” and Mommy Nearest calls these performances “amazing.” In reviewing a Just Kidding performance, the New York City Dads Group reviewer noted, “As a parent, it’s a big relief to know that whatever show we’re going to see there, whether planned or at the last minute, is going to be of high quality and capable of producing long lasting happy memories.” Personally, at Mamatomo Mama we can't recommend the shows more highly. Priced reasonably at $17.00 per ticket unless otherwise stated, you leave feeling like you got a bargain. Taking kids to see shows and live performances can have immense benefits and open their minds to new interests. We will be going back again soon. Now which show to go see?!
