The perfect song for Father's Day that celebrates the bond between fathers and sons - throw in some animation using thaumotropes and you have a fun activity!

I love using music to teach kids and often, once I've found a song that I love, that song is a great stimulus for an interesting and unique post. The song Like Father Like Son is the perfect song for a Father's Day post since it is a beautiful testament to the special bond between fathers and sons.

I wanted to visually demonstrate fathers and sons coming together in some way using a craft so I came up with making thaumatropes! Most people will have seen thaumotropes before and they are easily made by children aged 3 - 7 years old which is the recommended listener age for Frank and Lou's new album. Click here to see how they were made.

I made two thaumatropes - one for each section of the chorus.

I run, you run
I sing our song

The great thing about thaumatropes is that they show two items separately - in this case, a father and a son - and then the separate items are brought together and appear as one when the thaumatrope is rotated. Click on the video links at the top to see the thaumatropes in action!

These thaumatropes would make a fun Father's Day craft for kids to give to their fathers. Kids love seeing this simple scientific activity which demonstrates the persistence of vision - that is, the optical illusion created due to the fact that the human eye and brain can only process 10 to 12 separate images per second. Thus if something is moving faster than that, it appears as a single image.

About the new album Sun Is A Star

Frank Gallo, of Brooklyn's award-winning titans of kindie music, Rolie Polie Guacamole, and his dad, veteran children's musician Lou Gallo of Lou Gallo & The Very Hungry Band are a father/son duo who both have a lot of experience in kindie music and, after years of discussing the possibility of working together, decided to team up, along with Grammy-winning performer/producer Dean Jones. As one would expect, Sun is a Star includes several tracks that feature songs with a father-and-son theme and is a great album for fathers to listen to with their sons.

The new album will be available to purchase from June 8th, 2018 at CDBaby, iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify, and Amazon. Pre-orders may be placed now. Recommended ages 3-7 years.
