A perfect introduction to sewing for younger kids

felt craft travel carry pouch sunglass spork pencil case utensil pouch

We are about to go away on holiday and will be taking a road trip for over two weeks so I bought some bamboo sporks (spoon forks) so that we wouldn't have to use plastic forks and spoons while we are away. My kids are 3 and 5 and have never done 'proper' sewing before. This project was a great little introduction. Not too much sewing, quick to make, instant gratification. We talked a bit about saving the planet and how we should try to limit our use of plastic so this activity was educational in more ways than one!

These little pouches could also be used to hold sunglasses, pencils, jewellery...

So lets see how they are made...

I took a regular sized piece of felt 30cm x 20cm (11.81 x 7.87 inches) and cut it to 18cm x 20cm (7.08 inches x 7.87 inches - so same width as before)

Mark out 6 cm (2.36 inches) up the length and mark each cm with a pen. Make a hole along each cm point. I used my hole maker from my days where I did leather working but you can use anything sharp. Fold the felt up 6cm and make a new hole in the back section using the holes you just made as a guide.

Use tape to create a shoelace type of plastic ending on a piece of wool. This means that your kids can sew the edges together without using a needle. You can sew using a variety of stitches. I chose simple stitching for my kids but if yours have experience or are a little older you can try blanket stitch.

Cut out felt and embellish as you wish. I glued velcro to close some of the pouches and glued ribbon to create ties on some of the other pouches. Use strong glue to hold it all together.
