Ha so the point of this is that you can actually use ANYTHING to teach the alphabet! The point is to mix it up so that your child is engaged and interested. I think mine had no idea why I was bringing the fruit bowl over to the table where we were practicing our letters!

This method of laying out the alphabet letters in order is great because it teaches kids to use the alphabet song to read individual letters in the alphabet.
Most kids know the alphabet song before they can read all the letters. It engages them because they feel that they can already do it.
Lay the cards out in order on a table. You might be best making four rows or so. Its important that you can touch each letter as you progress through the song. Once you have been through the alphabet song once, use something to cover up a few letters. The letters that have been covered up you now DO NOT SAY but you clap your hands instead. Practice that once and then cover up some more. By now your kid will be looking at the individual letters more and having to remember what they are - and the song will help them. Keep the rhythm of the song as much as possible although you can definitely slow it down.
Use songs as much as you can to teach children. They don't care if you sound like a strangled cat (usually!)
I have so much fun doing this activity and because Im having fun, the kids do too. You can also do it using phonics but thats definitely more tricky since you don't learn the alphabet song using phonics sounds. It does work though!
Please see my video and excuse my singing voice. If I were a fantastic singer I might be in a different career!
